Truck cited for Ringling Bridge stoppage

The Coon Key Bridge project has drawn complaints about traffic from merchants and residents since it began. Now, at least three times within the last month, trucks pulling into the construction area have caused major backups on U.S. 41.

This morning, all westbound lanes of the Ringling Bridge were closed when a construction vehicle, which was eventually cited for disobeying a traffic sign, became stuck while trying to navigate onto the Coon Key Bridge. Though the Sarasota Police Department was able to clear the roadway at around 8:30 a.m., traffic remained heavy on Bayfront Drive, North Tamiami Trail and the bridge until after 9:30 a.m.

“Traffic as a result was really backed up,” said SPD spokeswoman Genevieve Judge. 

The Police Department already maintains a presence around all parts of the city, including that area and St. Armand Circle, and signage is up restricting vehicles wider than 10 feet, Judge said. But SPD is reminding drivers to obey that signage, but prepare for delays.

“Remember to allow extra time through construction areas,” Judge said.
