Public Works Director Juan Florensa has noted an oil contamination plan the town is preparing for Longboat Key is to ensure oil does not affect Sarasota Bay and other barrier islands.

Said Florensa: “We want to make sure certain parts of our island are protected and oil doesn’t get into the bay that could affect Sister Keys and Jewfish Key.”

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has noted that any county or municipality can improve on a state plan to prevent oil from the spill in the Gulf from coming to shore.

This video, taken Thursday, June 4, shows Sarasota Bay and Sister Keys from the shores of Longboat Key in Longbeach Village.
