Sarasota and Longboat Key have always been great places to spend the holidays, particularly for families. Some lucky people have been coming here for generations, and the second homes they own are a cherished family tradition.

What makes a great second home in Sarasota or Longboat Key? An informal feeling and a view of the water are the most important prerequisites. Here are three properties currently on the market in which we would be glad to spend the holidays.

Memories on Siesta

1350 N. Portofino Drive, Unit 102

This choice was actually the inspiration for this month’s theme. It really did serve as a getaway for four generations of the same family that has owned it since 1970. It’s easy to see why the family kept it so long. With two bedrooms and two baths, it’s sunny, recently renovated and has beautiful views across a green lawn to the bay and the Intracoastal. Deeded beach access is nearby. There’s also dockage for the family boat. It’s located in Siesta Harbor; one family member must be 55 or older, but visitors of all ages are welcome.

Priced at $499,900. For more information, call Scotty Ledford, of Sarasota Bay Real Estate, at 400-7360.

Downtown Arts and Dining

435 S. Gulfstream Ave., Unit 902.

For a family that wants more than the beach, here’s an apartment downtown in a classic older building, the Regency House on Gulfstream Avenue. You can walk anywhere downtown, but you still have a full view of the bay from one of its prettiest angles. The unit has two large bedrooms and two renovated baths, plus mirrored walls in the living area. The building has a pool and is so close to a wide variety of restaurants that you’ll never have to use the renovated kitchen with its granite counters and glass cabinet doors.

Priced at $550,000. For more information, call Brian Maher, of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, at 284-5070.

When Price is No Object

535 Sanctuary Drive, Unit C706

For a second home, it’s hard to beat a top-of-the-line condo on Longboat Key. You’ll get everything — space, views, amenities and world-class prestige. This high-floor unit in the Sanctuary is a perfect example. With three bedrooms and more than 3,100 square feet, there’s room for lots of grandkids. And with the pool, tennis court, beach and nearby golf course, you never have to leave the property. It’s securely located behind the gates of the Longboat Key Club and comes furnished. There’s an 800-square-foot wraparound terrace that’s great for entertaining and a bonus room that can be used as a nursery or office.

Priced at $2,599,990. For more information, call Carol Cohen of Michael Saunders and Co., at 356-3829.
