The spirit of the 1960s will return Wednesday, Jan. 23, as Long Island-based folk-rock harmony trio, Gathering Time, performs at Temple Beth Israel. The two-hour concert will feature songs from the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, The Youngbloods and Simon & Garfunkel.

Comprised of Glen Roethel, Stuart Markus and Hillary Foxsong, Gathering Time aims to revive the popularity of the folk-rock genre. Their music combines the social consciousness of Peter, Paul & Mary with the harmonic complexity of Crosby, Stills & Nash and the rocked-up folk sound of The Byrds.

“This music defined a generation, and profoundly influenced us as musicians and songwriters,” Markus said. “It was popular music that mattered, taking up the mantel of civil rights, public protest and social reform. But above all, it was memorable.”

In addition to playing the immortal songs of the '60s and '70s, Gathering Time writes its own, having released two albums of original music, 2008's Songs of Hope and Freedom, and this past September's Red Apples and Gold. The latter went to #5 on the folk-DJ chart and #12 on the Roots Music Report.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles Rd. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. To purchase tickets, call 383-3428.
