When Brigid Hewes started her career in interior design, she was involved in all aspects of it until she realized her passion — permanent fixtures.

She joined the team at The Tile Market seven years ago. The store brings in unique, unusual tiles from all over the world and has been established in Sarasota long enough to have a following, especially in the design community. The market relocated to 1962 Main Street last March.

“Tile takes on its own design and is usually found throughout a house,” said Hewes, a member of the American Society of Interior Design. “It’s going to be present for longer than a sofa or window treatment. I like the architectural aspect of it.”

The showroom is designed like a gallery and organized so clients can examine a floor piece and work their way up, bringing in various accent pieces and wall tiles. Most tiles are organized by color to make choices simple.

“Mixing different textures and materials is the current trend right now,” Hewes said. “Clients are incorporating glass with other items — ceramic, stone or porcelain. It gives textural interest as well as reflective interest — some matte, some gloss.”
