A few of the items Terry Petesch has framed in the past 25 years: teeth (for a dentist who wanted to save his son’s first ones), lots of African artifacts (he has two clients who are collectors) and a horseshoe for a Kentucky Derby winner who lives on Longboat Key (no, he won’t name names).

Petesch, who opened Terry’s Framing & Art Supplies in 1985, has framed a few odd things over the years. But for Petesch, who discovered framing by chance when he signed up for a class, regardless of what he is framing, the highlight of the job comes when the customer unwraps the piece from the plain brown wrapping and sees what he has created.

“That’s the best part for me,” Petesch said.

The store carries all price ranges, from $6-per-foot framing to $125-per-foot materials and everything in between. But sometimes, the best things are free.

Take a tradition Petesch started shortly after he opened his business: He began looking through newspapers each week for a piece of good news, frames it and hand delivers it free of charge. On the back, the piece always has a handwritten note:

“A gift from Terry.”
