Dr. Harvey S. Mishner hasn’t always been focused on teaching his patients how to live a healthy lifestyle, but the 30-year physician now is convinced there’s no better approach to healthcare.

In February, Mishner opened the Kaizen Total Wellness Center, a facility that creates medically supervised nutrition and fitness programs for clients.

“Our philosophy is that 97% of diets will fail,” Mishner said. “We want to teach people right from the beginning you’re not too old to change your lifestyle.”

Housed inside Mishner’s general practice in Lakewood Ranch, the center includes a room where clients can meet with a nutritionist, an exercise room and a conference room, where it offers flexibility, tai chi and self-defense classes, among others. Kaizen also offers a special program in which clients can take a group visit to a local grocery store to learn about reading labels and other nutrition-related items.

Mishner and his team are perhaps most excited about two unique pieces of exercise equipment at the center — the Power Plate and the bioDensity machine. The Power Plate is used by many professional athletic teams and is used to stretch and build muscles and increase balance. Mishner said he’s seeing it help patients with issues such as osteoporosis and arthritis. The bioDensity machine allows for strength training without pressure on the joints, a benefit to senior citizens, in particular.

“The possibilities are really endless in what we can offer,” Mishner said, noting he may open the facility for use by some local high school and college athletes. “These programs are open to the public.”
