Rosemary Altea fears death for two reasons, and they have nothing to do with her own fate.

If Altea were to die, she would leave her daughter and grandson behind, and she worries how those closest to her would handle it.

“I fear to leave my daughter and grandson in the physical sense,” Altea said. “Knowing what I know, I don’t fear the dying process.”

Altea, 67, a self-proclaimed psychic, spiritual medium and healer, will be a special guest at the grand opening of Gold Gallery Auctions in the Creekwood Crossing Shopping Center from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 17.

There, the internationally known New York Times best-selling author and teacher will discuss life after death and the art of psychometry — the ability, which Altea says she has, to absorb the energy of an object, such as jewelry and gold, and connect it back to the energy of its owner.

Jennifer Cascardo, Gold Gallery Auctions’ marketing director and Altea’s friend, convinced Altea to attend the event, the beginning of a planned return to the spotlight, after a few idle years.

Born in Leicester, England, Altea says she saw faces and heard voices as a girl.
“I didn’t think it was a good thing,” Altea said. “I was terrified. My mom was ready to send me to the towers (psychiatric).”

In her mid-30s as a single mother with a 10-year-old daughter, Altea met an old man who believed in spirits.

Soon, Altea says she discovered her spirit guide, Grey Eagle, who advised her to publish her first book, “The Eagle and the Rose.”

Before she first realized what connecting with spirits meant for her personal life — that her needs always come second — Altea feared being alone.

“People ask me if I’m ever afraid, but I only see things from my perspective,” Altea said. “Scientists say this world is an illusion. Truth is, people in spirit are more solid and real than we are.”

Even if that’s true, Altea admits maintaining relationships with ordinary people can be difficult. She hasn’t remarried. But that hasn’t stopped Altea from embracing her line of work.

“I think it’s very hard to have regular relationships because they always have to take second place,” Altea said. “It means more to help someone connect with that grandfather. I am not here to convince you one way or the other. I am here to change people’s lives.”
