Short for "fabrication laboratory," the G.WIZ Fab Lab was born at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and made possible through a $400,000 donation last fall courtesy of the Faulhaber Foundation.

Since the concept was developed, more than 50 fabrication laboratories have popped up in science museums, schools and colleges all over the world.

According to Fab Lab foreman Eric McGrath, the G.WIZ machine shop is the first of its kind in the Southeasten United States. It will open to the public this spring.

McGrath gave The Observer a quick tour of the facility, which is currently under construction in the front half of the science museum.

A skilled machinist and adjunct IT instructor at Keiser University, McGrath is the subject of this week's Backstage Pass feature.
