SMA Rifle Team to compete in nationals

Sarasota Military Academy’s Rifle Team is the county and state champion for 2014.

The Rifle Team won the County Championship this year Saturday, Jan. 11. The victory means the team will compete in upcoming national championships in Georgia and Alabama.

The co-ed team of 11 students will compete in the Army ROTC Service Championship and the Army Marksmanship Unit in February.

The students will leave to participate in national competitions Wednesday, Feb. 19 and return Thursday, Feb. 27.

The Rifle Team will first compete at the Army ROTC Service Championship in Alabama from Thursday, Feb. 20 to Sunday, Feb. 22. This will be the SMA Rifle Team’s ninth year competing in the championship.

The Army Marksmanship Unit will be held at Fort Benning , Ga. from the Monday, Feb. 24 through Wednesday, Feb. 26. This will be the Rifle Team’s sixth time competing in the Army Marksmanship Unit.

Sgt. Pellegrino says the students are excited but know they have a lot of work to do.
