Mets draft ODA slugger

The Out-of-Door Academy senior corner infielder Desmond Lindsay was selected by the New York Mets with the 53rd pick in Major League Baseball’s First Year Player Draft, which began June 8.

Lindsay played in just seven games this season as a result of a hamstring injury, but was still named one of the top 10 high school corner infielders in this year’s draft, according to MaxPreps.

Last summer, Lindsay joined the EvoShield Canes where he helped lead the Canes to a 12-0 record in the 17U Perfect Game WWBA National Championship. He was named the tournament’s MVP after going 12-for-31 (.387) with three home runs, a triple, two doubles, 10 RBIs and nine runs scored. Lindsay went on to help the Canes finish second at the 17U Perfect Game World Series where he was once again named to the All-Tournament Team.

The right-hander is committed to attend the University of North Carolina.

Mid-Range Game to hold Father’s Day Camp

The camp, which is open to all students who recently completed third through fifth grade, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakewood Ranch High, 5500 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Lakewood Ranch.

Cost is $40 for a player and his or her father and $30 for an additional sibling, which includes a pizza party at the end of camp.

Participants will work on a variety of drills, including ball-handling, game situations, footwork and balance, shooting, passing and more.

Pirates softball coach steps down

Braden River High softball coach Erin Spivey stepped down from her position June 2, after three seasons.

“The program is in a good position right now and has an opportunity to win a district championship next year and continue through (the) playoffs,” Spivey said in a statement. “Hopefully in the future I will have the opportunity to apply for the head coach position again, as it has been inspirational working with these young ladies.”

The Pirates (19-10) finished the season as the district runner-up, falling to Sarasota 14-13 in the district championship and Clearwater Countryside in the regional quarterfinals.

“We appreciate coach Spivey’s dedicated service to Braden River High School Athletics and our student-athletes,” Braden River Athletic Director Matt Nesser said. “Her guidance for the softball players and program has been a pleasure to watch. Her attention to details, on and off the field, showed leadership qualities all coaches need to adhere to. Coach Spivey has been great to work with, and we wish the best to her and her family.”
