+ Sarasota National Little League wins district crowns
The Sarasota National 9/10 Little League All-Stars went 3-1 to capture the Florida District 16 championship June 27.
Sarasota National outscored its opponents 45-20 to advance to the Section 6 tournament, which began Saturday at Twin Lakes Park. The team defeated Cape Coral 6-5 and Bonita Springs 13-3 before falling to Greater Naples 5-4.
Across the field, the Sarasota American 10/11 All-Stars captured a Florida District 16 championship of their own, defeating Sarasota National 10-1.
Sarasota American, which also began its sectional tournament Saturday, outscored its opponents 43-14 over the course of the three-game tournament.
In the sectional tournament, Sarasota American defeated Lehigh Acres 5-4 before falling to South Fort Myers 10-1. The team defeated Greater Naples 13-8 to finish second.
The Sarasota American 11/12 All-Stars defeated North Port 16-12 to capture the District 16 championship July 10. Sarasota American defeated North Port 5-1 in their previous meeting. The team will now advance to the sectional tournament, which begins Saturday, in Fort Myers.
+ Local therapist defends national title
Sarasota resident and FZICAL physical therapist Amy Haddad defended her gold medal in the high jump at the USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships July 12 through July 14 in Olathe, Kan.
Haddad, who was competing in the 45-49 age group, finished first for the third-consecutive year.
She also competed in the javelin for the first time, finishing second. Haddad also finished second in the triple jump with a new personal record of 32.803 feet.
Haddad plans to attend the World Masters Track & Field Championships in October in Brazil.
+ New Balance plans early morning 5K
New Balance Sarasota will host a Mid-Summer 5K Fun Run, at 7 a.m. July 27.
The run, which is free and open to all ages, will begin from the store, 1872 Stickney Point Road.

+ Extra Innings to offer camps throughout the summer
Extra Innings will hold weekly indoor comprehensive baseball and softball clinics through Aug. 8.
The clinics, which are open to players, ages 5-13, will emphasize fundamental improvement and are designed to help players enhance their skills and gain a competitive advantage.
Camps will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 15 through July 18; July 22 through July 25; and Aug. 5 through Aug. 8. Cost is $109 for members and $129 for non-members. A $20 discount will be given to those who sign up for multiple camps.
