+ Mustangs win fifth straight district crown
The Lakewood Ranch High boys golf team captured its fifth-consecutive Class 3A-District 14 championship Oct. 13, at Misty Creek Country Club in Sarasota.

The Mustangs shot a combined 316 to finish seven shots ahead of Riverview. Spence Schultz shot 74 to lead the way for Lakewood. Charlie Sun shot 78, followed by Barry McDonnell (81) and Kelly Sun (83).
Braden River finished fourth (347) while Sarasota was sixth (377).

Braden River’s Andrew Hammett fired a 73 to win the individual district title.

Lakewood Ranch, Riverview and Venice, which finished third, all advanced to the regional tournament Oct. 20.

Hammett, along with his younger brother, Chandler, and Manatee’s Richard Bennett advanced as individuals.

+ ODA closes district regular season with win
The Out-of-Door Academy volleyball team closed out its district regular season with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 victory over Bradenton Christian Oct. 14.

With the win, ODA forced a three-way tie for second place with St. Stephen’s and Bradenton Christian. The three teams had a blind draw for the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in the Class 3A-District 10 tournament, which begins Oct. 20. ODA will face Bradenton Christian in the district semifinals Oct. 21.

Seniors Natalie Buffett and Reanna Gregory finished with 15 kills and 12 kills, respectively, to lead the way for the Lady Thunder. Sam Emmons added seven kills.

+ Florida Meteors to hold fundraiser golf tourney
The Florida Meteors 12U travel baseball team will hold a golf tournament fundraiser Oct. 25, at the Legacy Golf Club, 8255 Legacy Blvd, Lakewood Ranch.

Registration will begin at noon, followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Cost is $125 per player and includes golf, lunch and refreshments on the course. Hole sponsorships ($200) and corporate packages ($600), which include participation for four players and a hole sponsorship, also are available.

Proceeds from the four-person scramble will benefit the team’s participation in the Cooperstown Tournament of Champions next summer.

+ Bulldogs post three wins over St. Petersburg
The East Manatee Bulldogs Mitey Mite, PeeWee and Unlimited squads all posted victories over the St. Petersburg Silver Raiders Oct. 18.
The Mitey Mite team won 24-0 while the PeeWee and Unlimited teams both won by forfeit. The Tiny Mites also had a strong performance. Phoenix Balot, D.J. Dawes and Ke’shawn Williams led the way defensively while Cobe Thomas and Lucas Despot controlled the offense.

Registration for the i9 Sports winter season is open to children ages 3 to 14 and includes flag football, soccer, T-ball and basketball.
