Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics wins gold; Esplanade launches tennis program; Pirates prep for summer camp; Ellenton Ice names new coach

Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics wins gold

Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics won a combined five team state titles during last month’s state championships. 

Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics’ Xcel Silver and Xcel Gold 2 divisions both posted first-place finishes at the USAG Florida State Championship. Xcel Silver gymnasts won 22 individual titles; Xcel Gold gymnasts won 39. 

Morgan Jendro scored 38.050 to win the individual all-around Xcel Gold state crown, and Emily Wilcox scored 38.125 to win the Xcel Silver all-around title. 

Levels 6 and 7 captured 46 individual gold medals, with all gymnasts qualifying for the regional competition in Alabama. Level 6 scored 115.20, the highest combined score out of 41 teams, with Leah Crowley scoring 38.25 to win the individual state title. Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics’ Level 7 team posted the highest score out of 46 teams, and Kelsey McLeod scored 38.625 to win the all-around state championship. 

“We have an amazing group of girls that are quickly becoming outstanding athletes,” owner and head coach Laura Parraga said. “We are thrilled to enjoy our success but are even more excited to look toward our gymnastics future.” 

Level 8 also won a team title with a 114.60. Daijsa Green won a pair of gold medals on the vault and in the all-around (38.55), a pair of silver medals on balance beam and floor exercise and a bronze medal on bars. She also qualified for regional competition and was named to the Florida State Team. 

After qualifying for regionals, Level 9 gymnasts Sandra Elsadek, Kelsey Walker and Ashley Bruneman advanced to the Eastern National Championships May 8 through May 10, in Kissimmee. 

Level 10 gymnast Derrian Gobourne qualified for the Junior Olympic National Championships May 15 and May 16, in Des Moines, Iowa, after posting a 9.650 on vault and a 9.550 on floor. 

Esplanade launches tennis program

Esplanade Golf and Country Club at Lakewood Ranch recently launched an invitational tennis program. 

The program includes unlimited access to tennis courts and programs. Cost is $90 plus tax per month for a single membership or $125 plus tax per month for a family membership.

Pirates prep for summer camp

Braden River High will hold its annual Pirates Youth Football Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 27 through July 30. 

The camp is open to all incoming sixth- through ninth-grade students at a cost of $125 for all four days or $40 per day. Those who register before July 24 will receive a Braden River football drawstring bag. 

The Pirates Youth Football Camp, which is conducted by head coach Curt Bradley and the Pirates coaching staff as well varsity players, is designed to provide players with fundamental skills that will enhance their individual development in a fun and positive teaching environment. 

During the camp, players will focus on individual position drills, 40-yard dashes, one-on-one competition and 7-on-7 games.

Ellenton Ice names new coach

The Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex recently named Nikita Alexeev as the new head coach of the Gulf Coast Flames enhanced U16AA program. 

Alexeev formerly played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he was the eighth overall pick in 2000. He also played with the Chicago Blackhawks and AK Bars in Russia. 

The Gulf Coast Flames is a youth hockey league designed to develop and prepare players for the next level with an emphasis on additional ice time, off ice training and the utilization of video programs.
