Sarasota Crew golden again; Suncoast Tennis League hosts awards

Sarasota Crew golden again

The Sarasota Crew won its fifth-consecutive overall team points trophy at the 2015 Florida Scholastic Rowing Association State Sweep Championships April 25, at Nathan Benderson Park. 

The Crew competed in 14 events and took home nine gold medals and five silver medals. 

“Winning the state championship for the fifth straight year is quite an exciting and unexpected feat, especially with Winter Park reasserting (itself) as the team to beat,” Sarasota Crew head coach Casey Galvanek says. 

 

Gold medalists include: 

Men’s 2nd varsity 8+

Men’s 3rd varsity 8+

Women’s 3rd varsity 8+

Men’s 4th varsity 8+

Women’s 4th varsity 8+

Men’s freshman 8+

Women’s freshman 8+

Men’s 2nd freshman 8+

Men’s freshman 4+

 

Silver medalists include:

The defending state and regional champion Sarasota Crew has posted victories in the six major regattas this season. The Crew will return to action in the USRowing Southeast Youth Championship this weekend, at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga. The regatta will feature 43 teams from across the Southeast. 

“In this rebuilding year, we will take everything we can get,” Galvanek says. “We will refocus for our nationals qualifier in two weeks and see what, if anything, June has in store for us.” 

 

 

Suncoast Tennis League hosts awards

The Suncoast Tennis League closed its 2014-15 season with an awards luncheon April 7, at the Meadows Country Club. More than 300 men attended. 

 

This year’s winners include:

60-2 — Longwood Athletic Club (champion); Courtside Tennis Club (finalist)

60-4 — Village Walk Tennis (champion); Cedars Tennis Club (finalist)

60-5 — United at El Conquistador (champion); Plantation Country Club (finalist)

60-6 — University Park Country Club (champion); Sarasota Sports Club (finalist)

60-7 — Venice Country Club (champion); Bath & Racquet Club (finalist)

70-1 — Payne Park Tennis (champion); Bath & Racquet (finalist)
