Sarasota Sharks
The Sarasota Sharks captured their 17th Florida Age Group Championship July 17 through July 20, at the University of Florida.

The Sharks scored a combined 2,761 points to win the 53-team 2014 Long Course Florida Age Group Championship. Sarasota finished ahead of Tampa Bay Aquatics (1,402) and Bolles School Sharks (1,222.50).

The Sharks’ boys 13- and 14-year-old 800 freestyle relay team of Marshall Webster, Brendan Firlie, Matthew Nutter and Brett Riley set a new Florida state record of 8 minutes, 11.35 seconds to lead the way for Sarasota.

Sixty-six swimmers qualified for the 2014 Florida Summer Senior Championships, held July 24 through July 27, in Fort Pierce.

Sarasota scored 1,794 points to win the meet, finishing ahead of the Blue Dolfins (957) and Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club (874.50). Grace Patrice won the individual high point award for the girls 15 to 16 division with 116 points. Alexandra Atkins was the senior girls division champion (87), and John Pelton won the senior boys division (86).

Six swimmers also were selected for the Florida Southern Zone Age Group Championship Team, which competed July 29 through Aug. 2, in San Antonio, Texas. Those swimmers selected include: Webster, Nutter, Riley, Emma Weyant, Jason Brzozowski and Arik Katz.

The Sharks will hold tryouts for the upcoming season from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25 through Aug. 28, at the Selby Aquatic Center, 8301 Potter Park Drive, Sarasota. For more information, contact Kim Motta at [email protected] or 922-922, Ext. 1321.

+ GSJGA players close out the summer season
The Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association held its final Elite Junior Tour event of the year July 31 to Aug. 1, at The Oaks Country Club, in Osprey.

+ Florida Burn Pennant team finishes third

The Florida Burn 2016 Pennant team finished third in the 2014 Perfect Game 16U World Series Tournament July 26 through July 30, in Fort Myers.

The invitational tournament featured 16 of the top 16U teams from across the country. The Burn finished 6-1 in pool play, scored a tournament high 36 runs and finished with a tournament low 13 runs allowed.
Sarasota’s Nick Long, along with Braden River’s Eric Kimsey, made the all-tournament team. It was Long’s second Perfect Game All-Tournament team selection of the summer and Kimsey’s third.

Sarasota’s Daniel Pierce, The Out-of-Door Academy’s Parke Phillips, Braden River’s Tyler Dyson and IMG Academy’s Gabriel Lozada also contributed to the team’s success.

+ Coastline Volleyball Club registration begins
The Coastline Volleyball Club will hold registration and placement for its upcoming Mini-Club season from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24.

The club is open to all girls, ages 10 to 14, and coincides with the high school season. Mini-Club season is designed to give elementary and middle school players an opportunity to train before club season begins in November. Players will receive skill training along with game strategies and game situations.
Cost is $300 and includes a Rox jersey. Participants will practice twice a week for seven weeks while competing in two Orlando events and a local scrimmage. AAU membership is required.
