Donations needed
Booker Middle School VPA 2-D/3-D art students are currently collecting irreparable, no longer playable instruments to be turned into a public art piece. Teacher Deb Herbert hopes to collect enough brass, woodwind and string instruments for her students to create modern art sculptures. For information on donating, contact Booker Middle School at 359-5824.

Running in circles
Pine View School hosted its annual Peramathon — the school’s version of a jog-a-thon — Feb. 21. Kids in grades two through eight purchased Peramathon-themed T-shirts and collected donations for each lap they completed. With music blaring, students and teachers alike enjoyed an active afternoon to raise money for the school.

Lights, camera, action
Sarasota Christian School eighth-graders turned a visit from author Janet Kastner Olshewsky into a mock TV talk show Feb. 21. Four students served as the interviewing panel while the rest of the student body played the studio audience. Students produced TV commercials based on Olshewsky’s novel, “The Snake Fence,” that played during the talk show. Students also displayed book reports throughout the production.

Hometown heroes
Sarasota Military Academy cadets received the “Hometown Hero” award Feb. 18, from the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes. The cadets worked together to provide 100 boxes of snacks, toiletries and other essentials for 100 wounded warriors and their families at the 2013 Road to Recovery conference in December.
