Sarasota County commissioners approved a variance for a property on Casey Key during a March 19 public hearing, for a stilted two-story home.

Three neighbors, including journalist and author Jack Perkins, protested the petition based on the potential noise from construction and aesthetics of an elevated pool proposed for the 5,400 square foot home proposed at 3909 Casey Key Road.

Attorney David Levin assured neighbors the technique used to build the vertical support beams did not involve loud hammering, as Perkins said he experienced during construction of a similar home. Commissioners added requirements for landscaping around the base of the pool with Commissioner Nora Patterson dissenting.

“As can be seen by the commission’s hesitancy to even make the motion, these are difficult.” said Commissioner Charles Hines.
