Sarasota and Longboat Observers win first place in Newspaper of the Year contest

Local Media Association, a non-profit, professional trade association comprised of more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada, announced the winners of its 2013 Newspaper of the Year contest. LMA honored six newspapers — four weeklies and two dailies — as the top newspapers in their respective divisions.

According to LMA’s website, “These award-winning newspapers displayed top-notch editorial coverage, eye-catching graphic design and prominent advertising layouts, exemplifying creativity and innovation in all areas of the newspaper.”

For the second consecutive year, the Sarasota Observer (circulation between 22,501 and 37,500) and the Longboat Observer (circulation between 10,001 and 22,500) won first place in their divisions.

Judges’ comments for the Longboat Observer included: Editorial: “Publication delivers a solid combination of relevant content, smart writing and thoughtful packaging.” Typography: “Compact, efficient design; color is used wisely; visuals are well-chosen.” Advertising: “Ads are clean, appealing and effective. Format and placement serve both audience and overall design.” Other comments: “Lively opinion section; graphics are helpful; text is witty and insightful.”

Judges comments for the Sarasota Observer included: Editorial: “Strong mix of news, public service and features. Well-written and strongly edited. Amazing amount of ‘refrigerator news’ for readers to clip. ‘SEASONS’ magazine is a special treat.” Typography: “Classic use of typefaces that are easy to read. Strong hierarchy of fonts. Teases, indexes and sells are well-executed.” Advertising: “Color palette for locally produced advertising without being garish. Ad directories are smart-looking!” Other comments: “Much to read and savor here. Everything about this publication is well thought-out.”

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute, Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Mo., judged the contest.
