Sale rummages up bargain hunters

When the doors opened at 3 p.m. Friday, March 5 for the St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Guild’s annual “Royal Rummage Sale” preview, there were approximately 500 bargain hunters in line at the Stella Maris Activity Hall. Tickets for admittance were $5 each.

The next day, event Chairwoman Mary Elizabeth Carey delivered some good news to volunteers before the official rummage sale began.

“Yesterday, our sales exceeded $10,000 and that’s in addition to the ticket sales,” she said.

After the cheers and applause subsided, Carey said, “The doors open in five minutes. Remember to smile, and keep the sales going.”

The line may not have been as long Saturday, but there was a steady stream of shoppers. Many were delighted with their finds and could be overheard saying, “It’s just what I was looking for.”

One gentleman was seen briskly wheeling a bicycle to his car while wearing a wide smile. It must have been just what he was looking for.

Proceeds from the sale are distributed by a Guild committee. Usually, donations are made to Catholic schools, Meals on Wheels, Resurrection House and charitable agencies.

The sale committee works most of the year organizing the event.
