The transformation of Gulf of Mexico Drive continues this week, with extended deceleration right-turn lanes being installed on the east side of Gulf of Mexico Drive at Bay Isles Parkway and Broadway.

Darren Alfonso, public information officer for the state’s Gulf of Mexico Drive beautification project, said the right-turn lanes should be complete by the end of the week and will not affect traffic in either direction.

Meanwhile, the town of Longboat Key’s hired asphalt contractor, Superior Asphalt Inc., is in the midst of repaving several town-owned side streets.

Gulfside Road, Bayview Drive, DeNarvaez Drive and Juan Anasco Drive are all being resurfaced — weather permitting.

Currently, the streets are being prepared by being swept and having the sod and soil at the edge of the pavement clipped back. Later this week, the streets will be tacked with liquid asphalt, and then the new asphalt will be placed before a final sweeping of the new road is performed.

Residents are urged to park on Gulf of Mexico Drive during the tacking period, to avoid collecting asphalt on car tires.

The streets can be used within one hour of paving completion.
