A 7-week-old bobcat found in Lakewood Ranch has been transported to the Wildlife Center of Venice for rehabilitation.

East County-based wildlife rehabilitator Justin Matthews received a call Sunday night from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, after Deputy April Allison found the young bobcat near the corner of State Road 70 and Lorraine Road.

“He’s eating well, drinking kitten formula out of a bowl and (he ate) a chopped up mouse,” Matthews said. “At that age, it’s still feeding from mom a little, but mostly eating solids.”

Dr. Mike Mossler, of Bayshore Animal Hospital in Bradenton, found the cub to be in good health, except for a slight irritation to one eye, upon examination Monday.

Matthews was unable to locate the bobcat’s den.

The Wildlife Center of Venice took the bobcat Tuesday for rehabilitation with three other cubs.
