Residents talk Bayfront Park community center plans

Approximately 50 people met yesterday to discuss the future of Bayfront Park Recreation Center.

At the meeting, architect Lisa Wannemacher, of Wannemacher Jensen Architects, presented a prospectus plan for a proposed community center that updated a 2009 draft Master Concept Plan created by the town and Sarasota County with public input. The plan Wannemacher presented at Wednesday’s meeting included a kayak/canoe launch, boardwalk, community garden and an active recreation field.

If the plans move forward, Key citizens could have the final say on the project via a referendum vote in November at the earliest. Nearly two-thirds of voters rejected a community center plan in 2004.

A second public meeting is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the Recreation Center.
