The newly renovated Bird Key Park celebrated its official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today.

The park, located on the John Ringling Causeway opposite Bird Key, now features four water access points, picnic tables, enhanced lighting, more parking space and a multi-use recreational trail for walkers, joggers and bicyclists.

With this new addition, the city’s MURT extends from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to Bird Key Park.

The next phase of construction for the trail begins in March and will connect Benjamin Franklin Drive to Lido Beach.

Park renovations cost $1.2 million, paid for through local money, as well as state and federal grants.
