Regent wins first match of 2014

East County residents welcomed the start of the new year during the Kitchner & Pierro/iBusinessSolutions Cup Jan. 5.

Regent and Siaana, headed up by Kelly Beck and Teresa Mull, respectively, competed in the first game of 2014. Regent edged past Siaana 11-8.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead at the end of the first chukker, Regent outscored Siaana 5-2 over the next two chukkers to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. Regent scored three more goals in the fourth chukker. Siaana held Regent scoreless over the final two chukkers, but was unable to close the gap.

Shane Rice scored seven goals to power Regent. Stuart Campbell scored the remaining four goals for Regent.

Frankie Llosa scored five goals to lead the way for Siaana. Josh Shelton added a pair of goals to round out the scoring for Siaana. Sianna started the game with one point.

Campbell received the Most Valuable Player award, while Llosa received the Best Playing Pony award for the performance of his horse, Izzy.

Teams return to action at 1 p.m. Jan. 12, in the Bay News 9 Cup, featuring a Go Team USA tailgate theme.

WORD PLAY
Chukker  There are six chukkers in a polo match. Each chukker lasts seven-and-a-half minutes, and players change horses between each chukker.
