Record rain improves drought conditions

Last month was one of the wettest months of May on record, bringing above-average rainfall in the Lake Manatee Watershed. A total of 8.55 inches of rainfall fell, more than 5 inches above normal for the month. The unusually rainy conditions decreased the area's year-to-date deficit to 1.54 inches. The increase also brought the Lake Manatee water level to above average for this time of the year.

Although the increase has been a much-needed reprieve from an extended drought, a deficit still exists, and watering restrictions have not been lifted. The need to irrigate lawns should continue to decline as additional rainfall is recorded almost daily. It is important to note, however, that Manatee County will continue to issue citations to residents in violation of the restrictions.

Water conservation is definitely becoming a way of life for most residents. Continued education and increased awareness will increase the level of participation, thus ensuring a vital resource for years to come.
