Although it only hosts three fundraisers per year, a Lakewood Ranch Women's Giving Circle is making good on its promise to raise money for local charities and nonprofit groups.
Sisterhood for Good granted $2,500 to four organizations at its third annual grant distribution event, July 29, at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall.
BioScent K9, a nonprofit in Myakka that teaches dogs to detect different types of cancer, received $500.
The Child Protection Center will utilize its $500 for programs to combat cyber bullying and other types of foul play against local children.
The Mark Wandall Foundation plans to put its $500 toward its first youth bereavement camp, which will be held later this year. The money will provide camp supplies for 40 campers who are dealing with the death of a family member or friend.
We Care Manatee won the $1,000 grant. It offers a free primary care clinic to individuals in need, and the money will go toward breast health and wellness exams.
Since 2012, the group has detected 16 cases of breast cancer by providing the exams.
"It's an honor to receive this money, and it will go toward good use," said Jill Gass, executive director of We Care Manatee. "This grant will help a lot of women."
Giving Circle members chose the group, because of its range of programs and dedication to helping local residents, Sisterhood for Good founder Angela Massaro-Fain said.
