P&Z readies for Comp Plan

The town’s Planning and Zoning Board agreed at its Tuesday, Oct. 19 regular meeting to hold a special workshop following its Nov. 16 meeting to begin discussions on amending the town’s Comprehensive Plan.

Planning, Zoning and Building Director Monica Simpson urged the planning board members to also attend a special Vision Plan workshop Nov. 11, which she and town attorney David Persson believe will set the stage for Comprehensive Plan revisions.

“I urge you to attend a good discussion of commissioners discussing the future vision of the Key,” Simpson said. “We want to know very clearly where we are going and what’s guiding us in the future.”

Persson agreed.

“The town is viewing its future differently than it did 15 to 20 years,” Persson said. “I think the Vision Plan discussion will help you when it’s time to consider amendments to the Land Use Element of the Comprehensive Plan.”

Simpson called the future Land Use Element of the Comprehensive Plan the “skeleton of the plan” and told planning board members their upcoming task will not be as daunting as they may think.

Also at its regular meeting, the planning board:

• Adopted a capital improvement element to its Comprehensive Plan, which will now be forwarded to the Town Commission.

• Appointed Walter Hackett and Laurin Goldner to a newly formed Florida Department of Transportation signage committee that will work to reduce the number of state road signs along Gulf of Mexico Drive.
