The new Longboat Key Public Tennis Center building has been under construction while tennis players enjoyed the courts this summer.

But the rest of the project is on hold for now.

Public Works Director Juan Florensa said last week the contractor was performing work in a ditch where a training court is supposed to be built.

But, because the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has not yet issued a permit to perform storm-water drainage work, the contractor was told to work only on the new building for the time being.

The approximately $600,000 project includes a new check-in building, a viewing deck, a teaching court and some building upgrades.

The new building will provide a larger check-in space for tennis players, more office space and larger restroom facilities.

The project is expected to be complete in December.
