The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is providing a $10,000 grant to assist the Sarasota Police Department’s minority hiring.

The grant comes from the Flourish Fund and is intended to give financial assistance to minority students wanting to attend the police academy.

“We sincerely hope that others will take notice and might consider supporting minority scholarships to our local police academy,” said Wendy Hopkins, a Community Foundation vice president.

One of the goals of the Police Advisory Panel, tasked with improving the police department, was to increase the number of minority officers.
