A pedestrian died last night at the scene of a crash that occurred in the 2900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

According to police, around 6:30 p.m. the pedestrian attempted to cross the street headed toward the Islander Club and was struck by a vehicle driven by a Longboat Key businessman who was headed home from work and attempted to avoid striking the pedestrian but was unable to do so. The man stopped to render aid and immediately call 911.

Longboat Key firefighters responded to the scene and provided treatment, which was unsuccessful. The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Family members of the pedestrian, who was visiting from out of state, and driver also arrived at the scene.

Police have not released the names of the pedestrian or driver.
