The Sarasota City Commission is expected to decide tonight whether to extend by two hours the daily period of parking enforcement.

Currently, enforcement officers patrol city streets from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but city staff is proposing expanding that to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The change would coincide with the installation of parking meters in parts of downtown, which is scheduled to begin as early as next week.

Staff members said extending the hours would ensure there is enough parking to fill the demand.
