Obituary: Stanley Edward Zeeman

Stanley Edward Zeeman, 86, of Longboat Key, died Feb. 10.

Born Jan. 7, 1924, he was a former resident of Allentown, Pa.

Dr. Zeeman served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, 11th Field Hospital, in Augsburg, Germany, from 1943 to 1944. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1948.

Dr. Zeeman founded Cardiovascular Associates Inc. in Allentown in 1963. He brought modern cardiology to the area by establishing its first cardiac catheterization unit. He developed the first paramedic cardiac response team for emergency medical technicians in the Lehigh Valley area. Dr. Zeeman served as chief of cardiology at Allentown Hospital and Lehigh Valley Hospital Center from 1974 to 1980. He then served as president of the medical staff of Lehigh Valley Hospital Center from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1986, he served on the board of trustees for Lehigh Valley Hospital Center. Dr. Zeeman received the Leonard Pool Prize for Service to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center in 1987. He also served as a clinical professor of medicine for Hahnemann University for the Allentown Affiliated Hospitals.

Dr. Zeeman was an avid golfer, historian and a committed, progressive democrat.

Dr. Zeeman is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bonnie; daughters Susan Rogers, of Forest Hills, N.Y., Wendy Blom, of Needham, Mass., Judy Golden, of Perinton, N.Y., Beth Zeeman, of Wayland, Mass., and Debbie Zeeman, of Pittsford, N.Y.; brother, Harold Zeeman Jr., of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Dr. Stanley and Bonnie Zeeman Family Endowment Fund for Cardiology, 1247 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Allentown, Pa. 18103.
