Samuel Loshaek, 88, of Longboat Key, died Nov. 7.

Formerly of Chicago, he earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Dr. Loshaek was known as a brilliant inventor who had a remarkable ability to focus on the essentials and to analyze all possible outcomes and then choose the best one. He held 40 patents and led research and development teams at Borden Chemical and Wesley-Jessen, for which he invented an unsurpassed soft-colored contact lens that changed eye color and catapulted the company to a major position in the industry.
Dr. Loshaek was a lifelong avid tennis player. He loved music, especially the Motown oldies. He is remembered for his clever, dry wit and sunny smile that lit up his entire face, along with his kindness, generosity, integrity, caring presence, wisdom and loving advice.

Dr. Loshaek is survived by his wife of 32 years, Risé; four daughters; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a sister; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donate to your favorite charity.
