Louis Flanzer, 93, of Longboat Key and Scarsdale, N.Y., died June 30.

Born Oct. 24, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was invited to join his adult neighbors playing chess in the park at age 6.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a sergeant and refused a promotion to stay with his men. After the war, he rejoined Flanzer & Son and expanded the business for his father and brother-and-law. He later became a successful real-estate investor and avid golfer.

Mr. Flanzer conquered his fear of flying in the 1960s, by becoming a licensed pilot and then giving flying lessons to both of his children. He was a dedicated philanthropist whose interests included hospitals and health care, substance abuse and Jewish charities.

He is remembered for his love of learning, sense of humor and respect for the truth.

Mr. Flanzer is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gloria; daughter, Jan; son, Richard; and four grandchildren.
Services will be private.
