Obituary: Lewis 'Lew' Gammon Jr.

Lewis “Lew” Gammon Jr., 63, of Longboat Key and Niagara, Canada, died March 7.

Born March 23, 1946, in Dunkirk, N.Y., he served for two years in the U.S. Army in Munich before beginning his 31-year career with Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. in New York. Mr. Gammon held various real-estate positions throughout his career. In 1990, he became property-tax director, a position that he held until his retirement in March 2001. During his time with the company, he won multiple exceptional-service awards and was considered a leader in the area of utility valuation.

Mr. Gammon was an avid thoroughbred owner who was a regular in the winner’s circle. He served as a director on the board of Beach Harbor Club for the past four years. He enjoyed beginning each day by greeting and visiting with his many morning walking friends.

Mr. Gammon is survived by his wife, Isabelle; daughter, Jenna, of Gloversville, N.Y.; son, Scott, of Philadelphia; and brother, Richard, of Erie, Pa.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in the clubhouse of Beach Harbor Club, 3800 Gulf of Mexico Drive. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, 328 Washington Ave., Dunkirk, N.Y. 14048.

Memorial contributions can be made to Old Friends, a Kentucky facility that provides at-risk racehorses with a dignified retirement, at 1841 Paynes Depot Road, Georgetown, Ky. 40324.
