Dr. James McGonigle, 74, of Longboat Key, died June 2.

Born Nov. 30, 1939, in St. Louis, Dr. McGonigle grew up in Pueblo, Colo., and graduated in 1961 from Santa Clara University and in 1965 from St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Dr. McGonigle completed his medical internship at the University of Iowa, then served in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at Mayport Naval Air Station and also served on the U.S.S. Pratt as the ship’s medical officer.
After the Navy, Dr. McGonigle completed his ophthalmology residency at St. Louis University. He practiced ophthalmology for 25 years in Joplin, Mo., and raised his family there.

In 1996, he retired and moved with his wife, Clara, to Longboat Key. He was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church and served as a eucharistic minister there.

Dr. McGonigle is survived by his wife of 48 years, Clara; daughters, Erika, Adrienne, Clara and Gabrielle; son, James; brothers, Michael and William; and 23 grandchildren.
