Bill Gray, 83, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key and Nashville, Tenn., died Oct. 9.

Born Oct. 24, 1931, in Pitt County, N.C., Mr. Gray graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk, Va.

Mr. Gray was a graduate of Virginia Tech who earned a degree in civil engineering. He received his master’s degree in structures and soils from Georgia Tech. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and was in the engineering profession for 63 years.

After retiring from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of Chief of Structures for the Nashville District, Mr. Gray came to the area in 1989. He had since been self-employed as a consulting engineer. He was a Navy veteran and a member of First Baptist Church in Sarasota.

Mr. Gray is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Lori Davidson, of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and several nieces.

A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at Toale Bros. Colonial Chapel, 40 N. Orange Ave. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Burial at Venice Memorial Gardens will be private.
