OBITUARIES: Edward Theriot Jr. and Stanley Waldheim

Edward Theriot Jr.
Edward Theriot Jr., 72, of Bradenton and formerly of Longboat Key, died July 5.

Born March 19, 1938, in Baton Rouge, La., he graduated from Duke University in 1960 and received a doctoral degree in physics from Yale University in 1967.

Mr. Theriot served on the staff of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois for 24 years before his retirement in 1993 as associate director for technology.

Mr. Theriot was proud of his participation in the construction of the Collider Detector at Fermilab while deputy project manager. The detector is still operating today.

After retirement, he served on review committees for the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.

Mr. Theriot is survived by is wife, Lee, of Bradenton; and daughters Sharon Theriot, of Natick, Mass., and Julie Anne Theriot, of San Mateo, Calif.

Stanley Waldheim
Stanley Waldheim, 84, of Sarasota and formerly of Longboat Key, died June 29.

Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Milwaukee, he attended Milwaukee University School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison with a business degree. Mr. Waldheim served two years in the Army Air Corp Cadet program during World War II.

He was born into a third generation retail furniture business and became president of Waldheim Furniture Store.

Mr. Waldheim volunteered at the Wellness Community Center, giving support and counseling to cancer patients and also volunteered at Mote Marine. He was an enthusiastic tennis player known as “Mr. Tennis,” and organized the Gift of Life Celebrity ProAm tennis classic to promote organ donation. He was also an active member of Bird Key Yacht Club, having organized the clay courts and acting as tennis chairman.

Mr. Waldheim is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters Wendy, of Kodiak, Alaska, and Jane, of San Jose, Calif.; sons William, of Denver, and Stanley Michael, of Duluth, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, July 9, at Bird Key Yacht Club.
