Herbert ‘Tuffy’ Meyfarth
Herbert “Tuffy” Meyfarth, 98, of Longboat Key and Freedom Village, in Bradenton, and formerly of Pepper Pike, Ohio, died July
19.

Born July 29, 1910, in Cleveland, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Case School of Applied Science, in Cleveland, in 1933. During high school and college, Mr. Meyfarth was known as “Tuffy” Meyfarth for his football skills. Later, in 1983, he was inducted into the Case Western Reserve Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mr. Meyfarth had a 37-year career with Republic Steel Corp. in supervisory and management positions.

Mr. Meyfarth was active in the YMCA throughout his life and was also a longtime supporter of Mote Marine Laboratory. He and his wife, Ruth, were avid tennis players. Mr. Meyfarth was a ranked singles and doubles tennis player in the over-70 age bracket.

Mr. Meyfarth is survived by his wife of nearly 71 years, Ruth, of Longboat Key and Bradenton; son, Fred, of Temple Terrace; daughter, Nancy Meyfarth, of Sarasota; four grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Meyfarth’s family will hold a private gathering to celebrate his life at a later date.

Carleton Merrill Stewart Jr.
Carleton Merrill Stewart Jr., 88, of Longboat Key, died July 9.

Born Feb. 17, 1921, in Chicago, he graduated from Stanford University in 1942 and earned a master’s of business administration from Harvard University in
1943.

Mr. Stewart served as a U.S. Army captain and was military governor of Nagoya, Japan, during World War II.

In 1947, he joined Citibank. He worked in posts both in the United States and internationally, serving as senior officer of Citibank London, director of Grindlay’s Bank Ltd. and director of Banque International pour
L’Afrique Occidentale, Paris. He also served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the American Security Corp. and American Security Bank, in Washington, D.C., and director of Travelers Asset Management International Corp., in New York City.

Mr. Stewart served as mayor of Longboat Key from 1987 to 1988 and was also a member of the Sarasota County Planning Commission.

Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia, and his daughter, Pamela.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathryn White Stewart; daughter, Sandra Stewart, of Miami; son, Jim, of Simpsonville, S.C.; sister, Jean Stewart Haney; three grandchildren; and three nephews.

Helen Long Warner
Helen Long Warner, 78, of Longboat Key and Georgetown, Mass., died July 25.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., Mrs. Warner was a nurse and received her training at McLean Hospital, in Belmont, Mass.

Ms. Warner was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Knorr and Arthur Warner. Ms. Warner is survived by her daughters, Janet Burns and Nancy Yorke, both of Georgetown; sons, Paul Brown, of Ashburnham, Mass., Carl Brown, of Groveland, Mass., and David Knorr, of Georgetown; brother, Richard Long, of Belmont, Mass.; sisters, Barbara White, of Newton, Mass., Charlotte Jensen, of Longboat Key, and Janet Flannery, of Amesbury, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, at St. Mary’s Church, 94 Andover St., Georgetown.
