+ Road vacated for Selby Gardens project
At the request of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota city commissioners have agreed to vacate a 60-foot-wide section of the South Palm Avenue right of way that ends at Hudson Bayou.
Selby Gardens is building a Children’s Rainforest Garden just south of Orange Street near the Hudson Bayou.
Senior planner Courtney Mendez recommended the vacation because the portion of right of way is on a dead-end street and serves no property owners on either side. Public access to the road will still be maintained via an existing sidewalk and pathway.
+ City street resurfacing begins this week
The city of Sarasota began a $1.7 million street resurfacing project Wednesday that will pave approximately 67 streets within the city’s quadrants.
The following streets will be paved with these tentative timelines:
• From July 27 through Sept. 9, streets north of Fruitville Road and east of U.S. 301.
• From Sept. 12 through Sept. 29, streets north of Fruitville Road and west of U.S. 301.
• From Oct. 3 through Oct. 25, streets south of Fruitville Road and west of U.S. 301 and U.S. 41.
• From Oct. 26 through Nov. 3, streets south of Fruitville Road and east of U.S. 301 and U.S. 41.
All dates are subject to change due to weather conditions. Door hangers will be placed on affected city residents’ doors five days prior to the start of the project in their areas.
The project is being paid for with sales tax and fuel tax dollars.

+ Patterson Foundation pledges its support
The Patterson Foundation is pledging $25,000 for The Institute for the Ages, a Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence (SCOPE) initiative.
If the institute meets its financial goals, The Patterson Foundation will contribute a capping gift of $375,000 over the next three years.
“We are proud to announce our support for The Institute for the Ages, an independent organization dedicated to researching and developing innovations to solve the challenges facing the community and our country as our population ages,” said Debra Jacobs, president and chief executive officer of The Patterson Foundation, in a press release. “Because The Patterson Foundation is a New Realities foundation, we have the flexibility, opportunity and the responsibility to invest in possibilities that are supported by multiple partners focused on making an impact.”
