+ Duncan, Younger seek new commission terms
Longboat Key Town Commissioners Jack Duncan and Phill Younger took out papers last week to seek re-election in 2013, according to Town Clerk Trish Granger. Duncan is a retired pharmaceutical executive who ran unopposed for his first term as District 2 commissioner, which began last year. The commission appointed Younger, who retired as manager of the technical-support area and line maintenance for Delta Airlines and also holds a law degree, to the at-large seat vacated by Gene Jaleski in 2010.

+ Longboat Pass Bridge project completed
A $1.1 million Florida Department of Transportation project to repair Longboat Pass Bridge was completed Friday, May 25. The project began in November and included bridge repair and painting, in addition to sidewalk reconstruction. Quinn Construction Inc. oversaw the project.

+ Commission considers Monday workshops
The Longboat Key Town Commission’s regular Thursday workshops could soon become Monday regular workshops.

The commission will discuss rescheduling its workshops to 1 p.m. Mondays during its June 21 regular workshop.

Commissioners discussed the proposed change, which would eliminate current conflicts with the Sarasota County Tourist Development Council meeting, during their May 24 regular workshop.

A proposed schedule for the remainder of 2012 was distributed at the Monday, June 4 meeting with regular workshops scheduled for Sept. 24, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17. Since then, however, Commissioner Jack Duncan has proposed alternative workshop dates of Nov. 12 and Dec. 10 to allow for longer breaks during November and December.

+ Mote treats dolphin that stranded on Key
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium staff is treating a female bottlenose dolphin that stranded Wednesday afternoon on Longboat Key and remains in critical condition.

Mote’s Sea Turtle Patrol found the dolphin at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the Sarasota County portion of the Key while checking on reports of turtle nests affected by high tides and stormy weather.

Mote dispatched a team that brought the dolphin to Mote’s Dolphin and Whale Hospital.

The dolphin has been nicknamed “Edna.”
