+ Town makes plans to use Colony bond
Town Manager Dave Bullock sent a letter to the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association dated June 14, noting the town’s intent to draw from a $50,000 cash bond to address some of the shuttered resort’s deficiencies.

In order to properly shutter doors, openings and windows during hurricane season, Bullock said it’s necessary to draw $3,152.50 to address concerns and bring the property into compliance.

If the Association does not address the concerns by June 28, the town will notify the Association of its failure to comply. The Association will then have 10 days to request a public hearing before the Longboat Key Town Commission if it disagrees with the town manager’s decision to draw from the bond.

+ Town manager makes pension appointments
Town Manager Dave Bulllock has appointed town employees Sandi Henley and Steve Schield as his two appointees to the town’s new General Employees’ Pension Board, citing their years of service and “good understanding and experience that can help the board in their work.”

+ Commission doesn’t grant easement agreement
The Longboat Key Town Commission did not grant an easement agreement between the town and Michael and Michelle Morris for the construction, maintenance and repair of a seawall during a special meeting Monday afternoon. A portion of that seawall has extended across town right-of-way property on Jackson Way that fronts on Sarasota Bay for years. The majority of commissioners, though, were uncomfortable the easement was non-exclusive and would force the town to give up rights to the strip of public property. The agreement will be revised to not give up exclusive rights as part of an easement agreement.

+ Tornado warnings concern mobile home park residents
Longboat Key Fire Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi reported he received three calls on Thursday, June 6, from concerned mobile home residents who were unsure what to do when the Key was under a tornado warning while Tropical Storm Andrea passed over the island.

Dezzi released information from the National Weather Service that states “there is absolutely no safe way to remain in a mobile home during a tornado. Tornadoes are too strong for mobile homes, even ones that are well-anchored.”

Dezzi said residents living in the Key’s two mobile home parks should try to get to a safer building while tornado warnings are issued for the Key.
