+ Sarasota conducts water rescue training
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and the Sarasota Police Department conducted water rescue training June 28, at Nathan Benderson Park.

The aviation and Sheriff’s Underwater Recovery Force units used a mannequin to practice a long-line method of extracting victims from the water.

The annual training is held prior to the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix.

Teams also learned short-haul rescue, a new capability using a long line and a basket. It would be used following high-water storm events.

This year’s Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix will run through July 7, at Lido Beach. It features 15 events, which are capped by the Grand Prix race July 7.

+ Manatee School Board seeks volunteer CPAs
The Manatee County School District is looking for volunteer certified personal accountants, as it expands its Audit Planning and Review Committee.

The committee will meet quarterly to review the School Board’s internal auditing, including financial procedures and reports.

The committee will also recommend external and internal auditors and school internal-accounts auditors to the School Board when needed and advise the internal auditor.

“We need independent eyes and ears to strengthen the financial functions of the school district, and this is a great way for local citizens to be part of the solution,” said Karen Carpenter, School Board chairwoman. “The members of this committee will provide oversight to make sure the internal processes and procedures of the district are functioning properly and efficiently.”

Applicants must live in Manatee County, be an active or retired CPA or have experience in school district financial operations.

The School Board will select five committee members.

Interested individuals should submit a letter expressing interest. The letter should include contact information and a brief summary of work experience. Deadline is July 19.

For information, call Lyn Lego at 708-8770, Ext. 2155.
