+ Condo residents await their return
Residents of the Dolphin Tower condo high-rise on Gulfstream Boulevard still don’t know when they’ll be able to return home.

The city ordered an emergency evacuation of the 38-year-old building July 1, after a large crack was found in a critical support beam. The crack was described as looking like earthquake damage.

Although the chance of a complete building collapse was remote, city building officials felt they should play it safe and order the evacuation.

The beam needs to be secured before residents can move back. City officials said it could take months to do that work.

+ Gubernatorial candidate visits
Republican candidate for governor Rick Scott will speak at the next meeting of the Republican Party of Sarasota County July 8.

Scott will also be fielding questions from voters.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the new party headquarters at 8292 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
Attendees are advised to bring a chair, because there will not be enough seats for everyone.

+ Workshop to focus on childhood obesity
Sarasota County schools, Sarasota County Wellness Coalition and Active Living for Life are teaming up to address the growing problem of childhood obesity.

The groups will hold a workshop from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the Landings School District Administration Center, 1960 Landings Blvd.

They seek to develop resources for parents to understand how their children’s body mass indexes can impact their quality of life.

The BMI scale measures a person’s healthy weight range based on their height and weight.
