+ Ranch operations launches lake plan
Following a burst of algae blooms in Lakewood Ranch’s lakes earlier this month, Lakewood Ranch Town Hall Operations staff now is working to implement a long-term lake maintenance program it has been working on for several months.

To start, select lakes will be stocked with carp, which are a natural way to control underwater algae and plant growth, sometime in May. Additionally, the operations department will be installing several pieces of aeration/circulation equipment intended to improve overall water quality and help prevent the growth of algae.

After monitoring how the equipment performs at targeted lakes, the department will use those results to make recommendations to the community development districts on what type of equipment it should invest in. Currently, the operations department is proposing the purchase of two solar Oloid systems, a Vertex aeration system, Solarbee machine and ultrasonic algae control equipment for a total of about $30,000.

“Ultimately, the goal is to improve the aesthetic condition of the lake, the response to resident concerts about that condition and to be using the right tools,” said Maintenance Manager Paul Chetlain.
Chetlain said the investment ultimately will save Lakewood Ranch residents money in lake maintenance costs and will help improve aesthetics.

+ Legislature passes red-light camera bill
After passing in both the The Florida House of Representatives and the Senate, a bill allowing the use of cameras at intersections to issue ticket to red-light runners went to Gov. Charlie Crist April 27 for a final stamp of approval.

The bill has been heralded by East County’s Rep. Ron Reagan.
