New GMD: Golf of Mexico Drive

APRIL FOOLS' — Because of the increase in the popularity of golf on Longboat Key, the bike lanes along Gulf of Mexico Drive will be removed to accommodate golf carts.

“I don’t know single person who doesn’t golf on Longboat Key,” resident Jay Walker said. “Most people own golf carts, so it’s a big pain to not be able to drive right home in a cart after a morning of golf.”

The construction is set to begin next month, and bikers are now asked to use the sidewalk and to cross at the crosswalks if the sidewalk ends.

“They’re really listening to us and our needs and doing what’s necessary,” Walker said.
