The president of New College of Florida, Gordon “Mike” Michalson has decided to retire, but that doesn’t mean he will leave the school.

Michalson plans to retire July 1, take a one-year sabbatical and then return to New College as a professor of religion in the fall of 2013.

“Clearly there comes a time when an institution benefits from fresh vision and renewed energy,” Michalson said. “Now is an excellent moment to begin the next chapter in New College’s history.”

With six years at the helm, Michalson is the school’s longest-serving president.

The classroom won’t be a new to Michalson. He taught a class at New College in all but two years of his presidency.
