+ Sorority pledges for cancer cause

When Phi Beta Psi Sorority members headed to the organization’s 107th National Convention at the Grand Hyatt-Tampa Bay last month, three East County residents — Donna Harter, Lynn Ball and Laura Cota — made sure to attend.

The ladies, all past presidents of the local chapter, joined about a dozen other women in the local civic sorority, which raises funds for cancer research.

The chapter made donations of six grants totalling $315,600, and also had one of its members, Marilyn Phillips, installed as a national officer in the role of Southeast Province Organizer. Phillips will be responsible for encouraging chapter growth and forming new chapters within her area. She is a past state president and past chapter president.

+ Adelines' group sings for 'HOPE'

Magic on Manatee members are raising their voices for Hope Family Services, which provides services to survivors of domestic violence.

The group, which included East County residents Ellen Linsley, Bev Whitby and Judy Lawrence, recently brought HOPE a collection of personal hygiene items to distribute to women using the center, as well as toys for their children.
