EAST COUNTY — Principal Harpist Cheryl Losey’s passion for music is one she developed as a young child. Her time spent in a youth orchestra not only encouraged her musical development but also helped develop Losey as a person.

“The Youth Orchestra really influences young people’s lives,” Losey said. “I know it did for me. It makes kids feel valuable. It creates a lot of discipline and self motivation and studying music also helps your creative thinking and problem-solving.”

On March 2-3, Losey will share her love of music and heart for encouraging young musicians with the public as she plays during the Sarasota Orchestra Association’s 37th annual Masterworks Showcase Encore Out East: A Tour of Luxury Homes event, held this year in the East County. The event, which raises funds for the Sarasota Orchestra’s Youth Orchestra program, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Tickets cost $30 in advance or $40 at the event, and they are usable either day.

Five luxury homes are being featured in this year’s tour, including one in The Concession, two in The Lake Club, one in the Country Club of Lakewood Ranch and one in University Park. Musicians from the Sarasota Orchestra, including Losey, will perform at four of the homes at set times each day, and local author Julie Woik will be a guest at a home, as well.

“It’s an outreach,” Sarasota Orchestra Association President Anne Scott said of having musicians at the homes. “The music is coming to the people.”
